Pearl millet:- (Pennisetum glaucum) is the most widely grown type of millet. It has been grown in Africa and the Indian subcontinent since prehistoric times.
Characteristics. With ovoid grains of 3 – 4 mm length pearl millet has the largest kernels of all varieties of millet (not including sorghum) which can be nearly white, pale yellow, brown, grey, slate blue or purple. The 1000-seed weight can be anything from 2.5 to 14 g with a mean of 8 g.
Pearl millet is grounded to flour and is used in making various baking products like breads, cookies, muffins, chapatis and biscuits. It lasts for not more than 15 days. The dried bajra grains are ground to flour which is light brown to greyish in color with a nutty taste.
Helps in digestion: Bajra is rich in insoluble fiber that aids digestion. It also reduces secretion of bile acids and is linked to a lowered risk of gallstone formation. Helps prevent cancer: Bajra has cancer-protecting properties
The niacin in these millets helps to reduce cholesterol and magnesium helps to lower blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart attacks. The high fiber content helps in keeping the glucose level normal. It helps in weight loss and also helps to cure stomach ulcers and gallbladder stones.
